Properties of cured epoxy resins

Epoxy has many active functional groups and can form a network structure in the presence of curing agents and stiffeners. The properties of the hardened epoxy depend on the following factors:

  • The nature and volume of additive additives

Surface Preparation

Resin and hardener must be kept in 77°F (25°C) for 24 hours before application. All surfaces must be clear of any grease, dust, hardeners, and other contaminants and should also be clean and dry before applying epoxy adhesives. The surface of any product to be adhered must be prepared to access the pure hard surface underneath which is to be covered with the adhesive completely. The surface must first be sanded with an abrasive roller with a diamond blade, the resulting dust should be removed with a fiber brush. After that, the remaining dust can be removed from the surface with a damp sponge to ensure complete contact. Finally, dry the surface completely with a piece of cloth, then start using the adhesive.

Directions for Use

The strength and durability of a bonded joint are dependent on proper treatment of the surfaces to be bonded. At the very least, joint surfaces should be cleaned with a good degreasing agent such as acetone or other proprietary degreasing agents in order to remove all traces of grease, dirt and oil.
Gasoline, paint thinners or alcohol should never be used for this purpose.
The strongest and most durable joints are obtained by either mechanically abrading or chemically pickling the degreased surfaces.

Mixing

Resin and hardener must be mixed thoroughly in room temperature in 3:1 mix ratio (3 parts resin, one part hardener) for 2 minutes using a spatula until a homogenous mix is obtained.

Note

It is important to use the exact ration and not mix approximate amounts of the components. Different ratios may result in different properties such as failing to cure or color change in time. After applying adhesive, tools and surfaces can be cleaned with warm water. Adding soap would easy the process.

Shelf life

Minimum storage life for unopened containers stored in a dry, cold area at less than 95°F (35°C), is 2 years with no change in adhesion or properties.

Precautionary Information

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Megatite adhesives are non-toxic and have low odor.
  • In cold temperatures, avoid crossing over the work site until the adhesive is completely hardened.
  • Before it is cured, resin is harmful to eyes and skin. Prolonged contact with it must be avoided. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Use suitable gloves when applying.

Megatite industrial adhesives for repairing leaking pipes in service

Before getting into the steps of repairing a pipe in service, it is better to get acquainted with the adhesives used for this purpose.

In general, we are faced with two modes of pipe repair;

    1. The pipe is in service
    2. The pipe or line is not in service

    In case the pipe is in service, in other words, if fluid is running inside a pipe or flow line, we would need two types of adhesive:

    1. Megatite UN Epoxy Adhesive (Instant Adhesive)

    For immediate and emergency cut-off of current in leaking pipes.

    1. Megatite PM epoxy adhesive (industrial adhesive)

    For permanent repair of pipe leaks.

    In order for us to repair a leak in an in-service pipe, we first need to instantly cut off the leakage current. Because without this, it will not be possible to repair. Therefore, to stop the leakage current we use Megatite UN adhesive, which is an instant adhesive typical for emergency repairs and hardens at 25°C within 10 minutes. Once the leaking current has stopped and the leak site has dried, we can easily use PM Megatite adhesive and repair the leak permanently.

    If the pipe or line is not in service, i.e. there is no current flowing in the pipe, the repair operation will be much easier. In this case, we are not facing an immediate situation. So you will not need the instant adhesive.

Tools needed to repair pipes and lines in service

Required tools:

  • Flat metal file
  • Miller
  • Sheet metal (15*15 cm)
  • 3 cm spatula
  • 15 cm spatula
  • Fiberglass band

Steps of repairing in-service pipe leak with epoxy adhesive

  1. First, use a flat metal file to flatten the area around the pipe.
  2. Make a sheet metal (15*15 cm) (this size can vary depending on the size of the leak) and bend it according to the diameter of the pipe. So that when you place the sheet on the pipe, the whole sheet sits on the surface of the pipe.
  3. Next, grind the inner surface of the sheet metal with a milling machine.
  4. Store Megatite epoxy adhesives at 25°C (room temperature) for 24 hours before use.
  5. Combine Megatite UN epoxy adhesive ingredients in a 1: 1 ratio (one part resin and one part hardener). This adhesive immediately reaches its initial cure in 5-6 minutes. Therefore, you should work fast; Otherwise, the adhesive will dry before use.
  6. apply the composite adhesive on the back of the sheet metal without wasting time. Then dry the leak with a napkin and quickly place the sheet on it and press firmly with both hands to stop the leak. Wait 5-6 minutes for the adhesive to dry.
  7. After the adhesive’s instant hardening, release your hands and remove the excess glue with a spatula.
  8. Using a milling machine, grind the leak area around the pipe and the surface on the sheet metal.
  9. Rinse the rubbed area with acetone. Then, with a distance of 25 cm from each ends of the leak, close the pipe with paper tape. So that the leak is in the middle of them.
  10. Cut a fiberglass band (20*100cm). The length and width of the fiberglass band can vary depending on the diameter of the pipe. What is important is that the width of the fiberglass band should be 5-6 cm wider than the width of the sheet metal, and its length should be twice the diameter of the pipe so that it can wrap around the pipe twice.
  11. Combine Megatite PM epoxy adhesive in a ratio of 1 to 4 (one part hardener and four parts resin).
  12. Apply the mixture of epoxy adhesive on the surface of the pipe with a 15 cm spatula. Cover a 2-3 mm thick layer of adhesive on the surface of the pipe. Note that the adhesive mortar should cover the perimeter of the pipe once and not go beyond the area between the two paper tapes.
  13. Place the fiberglass band on the epoxy adhesive and wrap it around the pipe and hold it at the junction.
  14. Re-apply the epoxy adhesive mortar on the fiberglass band and cover the entire surface. Wrap the rest of the fiberglass band on the pipe. The result should be such that the fiberglass band is wrapped around the pipe twice and epoxy glue is placed in between it.
  15. Once the fiberglass band has completely covered the surface of the pipe, re-layer the fiberglass band with epoxy adhesive mortar. So that a 2-3 mm layer of adhesive mortar covers the surface of the fiberglass bond.
  16. Finally, remove paper tapes and allow the epoxy adhesive to reach full strength for 24 hours.
